Booming creativity on the street

Colombo’s open air art gallery cum art fair, Kala Pola 2012, was held successfully on the sidewalks of Nelum Pokuna Mawatha with an assortment of beautiful art by George Keyt Foundation recently.

The fair started in 1993 with only 35 artists, and has continued to offer a perfect platform to hundreds of artistes around the country to showcase their inherited talents. Kala Pola is the most awaited annual event in the city of Colombo where painters and sculptors gather with their best works of art.

Having started in the morning, the fair continued till evening, letting artistes and art lovers being in their own world with extreme creativity. The specialty this time is that most artistes were from the northern and eastern regions. They do not have opportunities to display their work.

The tourist attraction was also at its best during the period. It encouraged the talented artistes to improve their creativity and to establish professionally in the field. Kala Pola is a popular and eye-catching event in the city and it continues attract a large number of artistes, George Keyt Foundation Chairman Cedric de Silva said.

De Silva gladly expressed their happiness that the fair has become prominent at national level. Kala Pola was influenced by overseas open air summer art fairs such as the legendary Montmartre in Paris and Turl Street Art Festival at Oxford University, UK.
